Pacific war update and Japanese sneak peek!

NEW NEWS!!!

Hi guys, been a while since I wrote much for BRS, been a long run of Infinity and Aristeia this spring!
I'm all queued up for a return to historical gaming this summer though and plan to get going with the D-Day campaign warlord are currently running:
D-Day campaign
In the run up to this, I've got my mitts on the American card update pack and one of the corsair aces to get the official card for my AiM corsair squadron (I've been using the beta one so far).
I'm happy with the metal corsair model, the fuselage is a lot skinnier than the AiM model but the wing angles look more convincing than the AiM resins do versus the pictures I've seen and the panel detail is crisp on the metals and should hold its detail really well. They also come with underwing rockets which is a nice touch and I guess will feature in the upcoming "Air Strike" rules due out this year.
Phillip Kirkwood looks like a solid addition to a corsair squadron; he gets a nice extra pip of firepower and two useful cards for getting stuck in "cool under fire" and "set them up" which alongside robust means you can take a kicking and not rack up too many chits, plus buff nearby squadmate's attempts to take out their enemy. In conjunction with "Vulnerable", a historical USA vs Japan game is going to be brutal with 2 extra dice on firepower tests!!

The American card upgrade pack features a good spread of new planes including the sought-after p-38, the B17 E/F for escort missions and the B25C. These are probably all overkill for new players to the game, but will provide some excellent options for customising the theatre spread and small-faction air forces that used these planes (especially if they're happy with "near enough" cards). Alongside these are the p39 (great for lend-lease players!), the apache dive bomber and an earlier variant of the p51 (B) for folk to play earlier war scenarios with their pre-existing mustang models.
As far as I'm aware, all of these exist as sculpts in the correct scale from Armaments in Miniature (linky linky) though you have to email him to order as there's no webstore function as yet.
The card pack features a few new cards that are interesting;

Interlocking fire will play nice for getting formations of bombers across the board (in open play those hordes of defiants are gonna get interesting!!)
Ken Natt (beta tester, of "Ready Room" fame, has stated there's a non-confirmed extra set of american releases too on the horizon for summer:
August 2019 (DATE NOT CONFIRMED)
• Metal P-47 Thunderbolt squadron
• Metal P-47 Thunderbolt Ace: Gabby Gebreski
• Metal P-40 Warhawk squadron
• Metal P-40 Warhawk Ace: TBC

Thankfully, the Japanese forces are getting their badly needed update to flesh out their choices!

We've seen some renders of the upcoming N1K2 fighter pack and have confirmation that the J2M raiden is coming too with the following aces:
• Metal Mitsubishi J2M 'Raiden' Squadron
• Metal J2M 'Raiden' Ace: Yozo Tsuboi
• Metal Kawanishi N1K-J 'Shiden' squadron
• Metal N1K-J 'Shiden' Ace: Kaneyoshi Muto

I have got a confirmed list of the planes that made the cut into the Japanese card pack:
A6M2 Zero
Ki43 hayabusa
Ki45 Toryu (twin engine fighter)
Ki61 hien
D3A Val (dive bomber)
G4M Betty (twin engine bomber)

These are all available (bar the Ki45 which is TBR) from AiM as per the link above.
I'm happy with this selection; the Ki43, Ki61 and A6M2 cover off a good spread of the war's theatres and eras and combine nicely with the N1K2 release to give a thorough spread of single engine fighter options. Its a damn shame they went with the ki45 though as I'm yet to find anyone who has a model for sale in the correct scale and I know AiM are struggling to keep up with demand let alone do new sculpts.
I already have the Ki61s and G4M's and can highly recommend them.
The pacific is really hotting up now that the Japanese have got some much needed love and that should only help this game grow further and cater to more enthusiasts than ever!
